Every year, companies grind to a halt for "Planning Season." It's a massive investment of time and energy. And according to Caitlin Haberberger, it's largely a waste. "The annual planning cycle is really getting outdated or already is outdated anyway, because... the minute your budget is set, it's out of date."

Business moves too fast for a 12-month lock. If you create a rigid plan in November, by March the market has shifted, competitors have launched new features, and your assumptions are trash. If you "put it on a shelf" and ignore reality, you are piloting the ship with a map from last year.

Lightweight and Real-Time

The alternative isn't chaos; it's agility. Caitlin advocates for a process that is "more lightweight but real-time." Instead of a massive annual overhaul, finance should drive continuous, rolling forecasts. This allows leadership to reallocate resources on the fly—hiring more engineers when a product hits, or cutting spend when a channel dries up.

This shift requires better tools. You can't do real-time forecasting in a static spreadsheet web. "Luckily there are more tools available to us now to make that easier," Caitlin says. By leveraging modern FP&A platforms and AI, finance can stop being the "Department of No" and start being the "Department of How Fast?"
