Consolidation
A translation reserve you cannot decompose is a plug with a respectable name.
- Consolidation decides what the group owns and earns. Reporting presents it. Get the first wrong and the second is a well presented wrong number.
- Translation runs on three rate bases, and the historical rate for equity needs a schedule that most groups never kept.
- A cumulative translation reserve derived as the residual is a plug. Built from its components it can be explained line by line.
- Consolidation follows control, not ownership percentage. The entities that get it wrong are the ones where the shareholding was checked and the agreements were not.
- Non controlling interest through a chain is effective interest, not the top level percentage. Eighty percent of seventy is fifty six, so the minority is forty four.
AI agents for financial consolidation work the accounting, not the presentation. ChatFin holds the rate basis per line class and per entity so the cumulative translation reserve is built from its components, computes effective interest through the whole ownership chain, and classifies what is left after elimination before it is posted.
That is a different job from reporting and it has a different owner. ChatFin surfaces the entities where holding percentage and accounting treatment disagree for the group controller to review, and leaves the control judgement with the person who signs it.
Consolidation is an accounting process, reporting is its output
These two get bought together and run by different people. Consolidation decides what the group actually owns and earns. Reporting presents it. ChatFin separates them because the failure modes have nothing in common.
| Question | Consolidation or reporting | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| Do we control this entity | Consolidation | Group controller |
| At what rate does this translate | Consolidation | Group controller |
| What is the minority share | Consolidation | Group controller |
| Which eliminations remain | Consolidation | Group controller |
| How does the board see this | Reporting | FP&A |
| What is the commentary | Reporting | FP&A |
Get the first four wrong and the fifth and sixth are a beautifully presented wrong number. ChatFin works the accounting first and treats presentation as a separate job, covered on AI for financial reporting.
ChatFin treats consolidation as accounting and reporting as presentation, because a translation error is not a formatting problem and cannot be fixed downstream.
Translation fails on the rate, and the rate is three rates
Every group accountant knows a balance sheet translates at closing and a profit and loss at average. What breaks the consolidation is the third case, equity, which translates at historical rate and therefore needs a history nobody kept.
ChatFin holds the rate basis per line class and per entity, so the cumulative translation reserve can be built up from its parts rather than derived as the number that makes the balance sheet balance. A translation reserve you cannot decompose is a plug with a respectable name.
ChatFin builds the cumulative translation reserve from its components rather than as the residual, so it can be explained line by line.
The control test decides who consolidates, and it is a judgement
Under IFRS 10 and ASC 810 consolidation follows control, not ownership percentage. That distinction is where group structures get it wrong, usually at the edges, and usually because the shareholding was checked and the agreements were not.
| Holding | What people assume | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Over 50 percent | Consolidate | Usually right, not always |
| Exactly 50 percent | Equity account | The shareholder agreement |
| Under 50 percent | Equity account | Whether you direct the activities |
| Under 20 percent | Investment | Board seats and veto rights |
| A structured entity | Nothing to consolidate | Exposure to variable returns |
ChatFin does not make that determination. It surfaces the entities where the holding percentage and the accounting treatment disagree, and where an agreement or a board composition changed in the period, so the group controller reviews a short list rather than a register. The judgement stays with the person who signs.
Non controlling interest is where the arithmetic quietly stops working
Minority interest is simple in a two entity group and stops being simple the moment there is a chain. ChatFin sees the same four errors across estates of every size.
Indirect holdings
A parent holds 80 percent of A which holds 70 percent of B. The effective interest in B is 56 percent and the non controlling interest is 44, not 30. Chains get computed by hand and hands make errors.
Changes in the period
A stake bought mid year splits the result before and after. Consolidating the full year and adjusting afterwards produces a different number from consolidating two stubs.
Losses beyond the interest
Under both standards losses are allocated to non controlling interest even when it goes negative. Systems often stop at zero, which quietly moves the loss to the parent.
Elimination against the wrong share
An intercompany profit eliminated fully against the parent when part of it belongs to the minority. Small, systematic, and it accumulates in retained earnings.
ChatFin computes effective interest through the whole chain, splits the period on any change in holding, and shows the non controlling share of each elimination rather than netting it into one figure.
ChatFin computes effective interest through the ownership chain rather than multiplying at the top, which is where indirect holdings go wrong.
What is left after elimination is the real question
Consolidation systems report that eliminations ran. What matters is what did not eliminate and why, which is the same pair matching problem the intercompany function solves, arriving one level up.
| Residual | What it actually is | Where it should go |
|---|---|---|
| Timing difference | Two correct entries, one month apart | Nowhere, it reverses |
| Rate difference | One relationship, two rate bases | Group result or reserve |
| Unrealised profit in stock | Real, and it must be eliminated | Against inventory |
| A genuine dispute | Two entities disagree | To the two entities |
| An omission | One side never posted | To the entity that missed it |
Only the third belongs in the consolidation adjustment. The other four are somebody's work and get treated as a consolidation problem because that is where they surface. ChatFin classifies the residual before it is posted, using the same five way split described on AI for intercompany accounting.

Questions group controllers ask
Why separate consolidation from financial reporting?
Because they are different processes with different owners. Consolidation determines what the group controls, at what rates it translates and what share belongs to minorities, and the group controller owns it. Reporting presents the result and FP&A owns it. A translation error is not a presentation problem and cannot be fixed downstream.
What is actually inside our translation reserve?
On most estates, nobody can say. The reserve is frequently derived as the figure that makes the translated balance sheet balance, which makes it a plug. ChatFin holds the rate basis per line class and per entity so the reserve is built up from closing, average and historical rate movements and can be decomposed.
Does ChatFin decide whether we control an entity?
No. Control under IFRS 10 and ASC 810 is a judgement made against shareholder agreements, board composition and veto rights. ChatFin surfaces the entities where the holding percentage and the accounting treatment disagree, and where governance changed in the period, so the review list is short and the decision stays with the group controller.
Why is our minority interest wrong in a chain?
Because the top level percentage gets used instead of the effective interest. A parent holding eighty percent of A, which holds seventy percent of B, has a fifty six percent effective interest in B and a forty four percent minority, not thirty. ChatFin computes through the chain and splits the period on any change in holding.
Build the reserve from its parts, classify the residual.
ChatFin holds the rate basis per line class and per entity, so the cumulative translation reserve is decomposable rather than derived as a balancing figure.
It computes effective interest through the ownership chain and classifies each elimination residual before it is posted, so only unrealised profit lands as a consolidation adjustment.
