SAP HANA AI
Alternatives Compared
HANA support is the vaguest claim in enterprise finance software. It can mean four different things and they are not interchangeable.
- HANA support can mean S/4HANA, ECC on HANA, a data mart, or simply running on HANA infrastructure. They are not interchangeable and only one question separates them.
- Most SAP teams already own native workflow, analytics and a close platform, and still cannot explain a movement without somebody walking the documents.
- On SAP, human in the loop can be structural rather than a policy, because an RFC enabled BAPI does not auto commit. Ask what a tool does instead of parking.
- The whole population duplicate test on two years and four keys is what this platform is uniquely good at, and it is a fair test of whether a tool uses it.
- The parked document backlog by age and releaser takes seconds to produce and almost nobody has it.
Comparing AI tools for SAP finance starts with one question that eliminates most of a shortlist. HANA support can mean S/4HANA with the universal journal, ECC running on HANA where the universal journal does not exist, a modelled data mart that is not the ledger at all, or nothing more than running on HANA infrastructure. A vendor that answers HANA support without naming the application has not answered.
This page ranks no products and makes no claim about any vendor's features or pricing. It gives you that question, the category map, five tests you can run on your own records, and the write back test that SAP makes unusually easy to judge. ChatFin is an agent layer and every test here applies to it.
Establish which SAP you run before reading any vendor claim
HANA support is the vaguest claim in enterprise finance software. It can mean four different things and they are not interchangeable, so a shortlist assembled on that phrase is not a shortlist.
| What a vendor might mean | What it actually supports |
|---|---|
| S/4HANA | The universal journal, CDS views, OData |
| ECC running on HANA | BKPF, BSEG, FAGLFLEXA. No universal journal |
| A HANA data mart or BW | A modelled copy of your data, not the ledger |
| It runs fast on HANA infrastructure | Nothing about finance objects at all |
ChatFin states which application it is reading and which objects it uses. A tool that answers HANA support without naming the application has not answered.
Four categories, and they do different jobs
Statements about categories, not about any named product.
| Category | The job | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| SAP native automation and workflow | Validations, substitutions, approvals | Rule based, so it covers what was anticipated |
| Analytics and BW | Modelled reporting at speed | Presents the model, not the ledger |
| Close management platforms | Task orchestration, certification, evidence | Manages the process, not the retrieval inside a task |
| An agent layer | Reads at line item grain, reasons, prepares, parks | Depends on line item access and governed RFC |
Most SAP teams already own the first three and still cannot explain a movement without somebody walking the documents. That is the gap.
Five tests on your own data
All five use records you already have.
Name the application
Ask which SAP objects it reads. If it cannot name them, stop here
The whole population duplicate test
Two years, four keys, including the goods receipt test. This is what the platform is uniquely good at
The parked document backlog
By age and releaser. Seconds to produce and almost nobody has it
The line item variance walk
Decompose a movement and separate close postings from trading. This separates reporting tools from agents
The answer you cannot check
Ask for the ledger, company code, period, posting status and row count behind any figure
Write back, and why SAP makes this easy to judge
On most platforms human in the loop is a policy. On SAP it can be structural, and that is a meaningful difference worth testing for.
ChatFin parks and releases nothing, so there is no second approval mechanism to build or audit alongside your existing SAP workflow.
When the answer is not yet
Three.

Questions SAP teams ask first
What does HANA support actually mean?
Four different things. S/4HANA, where finance sits in the universal journal read through CDS views. ECC running on HANA, where documents are still in BKPF and BSEG and the universal journal does not exist. A HANA data mart or BW, which is a modelled copy rather than the ledger. Or simply that the product runs on HANA infrastructure, which says nothing about finance objects. Ask which, in writing, before any demonstration.
How do you test write back safety on SAP?
Ask what the tool does instead of parking. An RFC enabled BAPI does not auto commit, so a document created through one is parked and waits for release through SAP workflow, and that is enforced by the interface rather than configured. If a tool posts directly, its safety story is a setting somebody can change under deadline pressure. ChatFin parks and releases nothing.
What can an agent layer do that analytics cannot?
Reason about an exception and prepare work. Analytics presents what its model holds at speed, and a close platform orchestrates the process, and neither opens the documents behind a number or decides what to do with an invoice that failed to match. That is why teams owning all three still walk the documents by hand when somebody asks why an account moved.
Name the application, read line items, park the document.
ChatFin states which SAP application and objects it reads, works at line item grain rather than from a model, and groups exceptions by cause.
Everything it creates is a parked SAP document released through your existing workflow, so there is no second approval system to audit.
