HANA Payables
HANA does not make payables faster. It makes checks practical that were previously a weekend job, which is a different and better thing.
- HANA is the database. Payables lives in the application above it, and S/4HANA and ECC on HANA read completely differently.
- Running ECC on HANA makes reporting faster and changes nothing about where documents live. A tool assuming the universal journal finds nothing.
- In memory speed does not make payables processing faster. It makes whole population checks practical, continuously rather than at period end.
- In a worked two year duplicate test on four keys, the goods receipt test found 14 genuine duplicates the standard reference check cannot find, because the reference is what changed.
- Whatever the database, an RFC enabled BAPI does not auto commit, so the parked document remains the control.
AI agents for SAP payables on HANA read through CDS views on S/4HANA or through RFC enabled BAPIs and the ledger tables where you run ECC on HANA, use the platform's speed to test the whole invoice population rather than a sample, and create parked documents for release through SAP workflow. ChatFin releases nothing.
The honest framing is that HANA does not solve a payables throughput problem, because throughput is limited by people and documents rather than by query time. What it changes is which checks are practical. Testing every invoice against every other on several keys across two years is a weekend job on a row store and returns in seconds here, which is why it gets run at all.
Which application you run decides the whole payables read
HANA is the database. Payables lives in the application on top of it, and the two common cases read completely differently. Getting this wrong is the most common failure in an SAP AI evaluation.
| What you run | Where payables sits | How an agent reads it |
|---|---|---|
| S/4HANA | The universal journal, with supplier invoice objects above it | CDS views and OData services, plus BAPIs to create parked documents |
| ECC on HANA | BKPF, BSEG, RBKP and RSEG as on any ECC | RFC enabled BAPIs and the ledger tables. ACDOCA is not there |
| Either, with a data mart on HANA | A modelled copy | Read the system of record, not the copy |
Running ECC on HANA makes reporting faster and changes nothing about where the documents live. A tool assuming the universal journal will find nothing.
ChatFin establishes which application it is reading before anything else, and says so. A payables figure from the wrong layer is internally consistent and wrong.
What the speed actually buys in payables
Not faster processing. Payables throughput is limited by people and documents, not by query time. What in memory speed buys is the ability to ask questions across the whole population interactively, which changes which questions are worth asking.
A worked whole population duplicate test
Two years of supplier invoices, tested on four keys rather than the standard reference check. On a row store this is a weekend job. Here it returns in seconds, which is why it gets run at all.
| Test | Matches | Of which genuine | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor, amount and reference | 6 | 6 | The standard check. Already caught |
| Vendor and amount, reference normalised | 19 | 11 | Punctuation and leading zeros |
| Same goods receipt consumed twice | 14 | 14 | The reference changed. This is the money |
| Same amount across two company codes | 23 | 4 | Mostly legitimate recharges |
| Near amount within rounding, same vendor and week | 31 | 3 | High noise, low yield |
The third row is what the standard check cannot find, because the reference is exactly what changed. Twenty eight genuine duplicates over two years that were never going to surface any other way.
ChatFin runs all four tests on one read and reports the yield per test, so a noisy test is visible as noisy rather than quietly padding the exception list.
The parked document is still the control
Whatever the database, an RFC enabled BAPI does not auto commit, so a document an agent creates is parked and waits for release through SAP workflow.
ChatFin creates parked documents and releases nothing, so no second approval mechanism has to be built or audited alongside your existing SAP workflow.

Questions SAP payables teams ask first
Does an agent read S/4HANA and ECC on HANA the same way?
No, and this is the most common failure in an SAP AI evaluation. On S/4HANA the finance data sits in the universal journal with supplier invoice objects above it, read through CDS views and OData. On ECC running on HANA the documents are still in BKPF, BSEG, RBKP and RSEG, and the universal journal is not there at all. Running ECC on HANA makes reporting faster and moves nothing. ChatFin establishes which application it is reading first.
What does HANA actually change for payables?
Which checks are practical. Payables throughput is limited by people and documents, so speed does not process invoices faster. What it enables is whole population testing: every invoice against every other on several keys, vendor level pattern analysis across years, and reconciliation run continuously rather than as a month end task. That last one is the biggest change available.
Which duplicate test finds what the standard check misses?
The goods receipt test. The standard check runs on vendor, amount and reference, and the duplicate that gets paid is the one where the reference changed, usually a chased document resent under a new number. One goods receipt cannot support two invoices for the same goods. In a worked two year test that found 14 genuine duplicates nothing else would have surfaced.
Run the checks that used to be a weekend job.
ChatFin establishes which application it is reading, tests the whole invoice population on several keys rather than a sample, and analyses blocks by vendor and reason across years.
Everything it creates is a parked SAP document released by a named person through your existing workflow.

Bring two years of supplier invoices.
We will run the whole population duplicate test through ChatFin on four keys, including the goods receipt test the standard check cannot do.
