AI Agents for
SAP ECC6 FP&A
An agent written against S/4HANA looks for ACDOCA. On ECC6 that table does not exist, and the analysis lives somewhere else entirely.
- ECC6 is not S/4HANA. General ledger line items sit in FAGLFLEXA under new general ledger, displayed through FAGLL03. An agent looking for ACDOCA is reading a table that is not there.
- Finance and controlling are separate and can legitimately disagree. An analysis that treats them as one ledger reports reconciling items as business movements.
- Name the plan version, its lock date and its coverage on every variance. A reforecast covering 60 percent of cost centres produces a comparison that means very little.
- In a worked 268,000 cost centre variance, only 51,000 was an operational overspend. The rest was a planning gap, an internal order settlement and a released accrual.
- Split primary cost from allocated cost. It is rarely presented and it removes most of the questions a cost review generates.
AI agents for SAP ECC6 FP&A read the general ledger where ECC6 actually keeps it, which is FAGLFLEXA under new general ledger rather than the S/4HANA universal journal, and read controlling separately because finance and controlling are two ledgers that can legitimately disagree. ChatFin returns the selection, the ledger, the period, the posting status and the row count with every figure, and posts nothing.
Two things make ECC6 variance analysis unreliable, and neither is arithmetic. Plan versions are rarely named and almost never reported with their coverage, so a partial reforecast produces a variance that is an artefact. And allocations move cost after the fact, so a cost centre manager investigating an overspend often finds an assessment cycle rather than anything they did.
On ECC6 the ledger is not where S/4HANA keeps it
This is the first thing to get right and the most common thing to get wrong. An agent written against S/4HANA looks for ACDOCA. On ECC6 that table does not exist, and the analysis lives somewhere else entirely.
| What you want | Where it is on ECC6 | Note |
|---|---|---|
| General ledger line items | FAGLFLEXA under new general ledger | Displayed through FAGLL03. Classic general ledger installations differ again |
| Document header and lines | BKPF and BSEG | The authority behind every figure |
| Cost centre and internal order actuals | Controlling tables, separate from finance | The reconciliation between the two is a real monthly task |
| Profit centre view | Profit centre accounting, its own ledger | Often maintained differently to the finance hierarchy |
| Plan data | Plan versions in controlling | Version matters. Comparing to the wrong version is a silent error |
The split between finance and controlling is the structural fact an FP&A agent on ECC6 has to handle. The two can disagree legitimately, and an analysis that assumes they are one ledger will report reconciling items as business movements.
ChatFin reads finance and controlling separately and reports the reconciliation between them rather than blending the two into one number.
Which plan version, and does anyone know
Plan versions multiply. Original budget, reforecast one, reforecast two, a working copy somebody made in March. A variance means nothing until the version is named.
ChatFin names the plan version and its coverage on every comparison. Where a reforecast is partial it reports the split rather than presenting one number.
A worked cost centre variance, 268,000 over plan
A cost centre group is 268,000 over plan for the quarter. The controlling report says that. Rebuilt from the line items behind it, it is five things with four owners.
| Component | Amount | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| A cost centre added in month two, not in the plan version | 112,000 | No plan line exists for it at all |
| Internal order settlement landing in the group | 64,000 | One settlement run, visible only in controlling |
| Prior period accrual released | 47,000 | One journal, reversing an over accrual from the previous quarter |
| Genuine rate increase on two supplier contracts | 51,000 | Invoices at the new rate from the renewal date |
| Residual | negative 6,000 | Aggregated, 94 lines, none above 500 |
| Total | 268,000 | Adds back to the reported variance |
Only the fourth line is an operational overspend. The first is a planning gap, the second is a controlling allocation, the third is accounting. A commentary calling the whole 268,000 an overspend is wrong by four fifths.
Allocations, which explain half of what people query
Assessments, distributions and settlements move cost after the fact. A cost centre manager looking at a variance frequently finds an allocation rather than anything they did.
Separate primary cost from allocated cost, always
They answer different questions. A manager can act on primary cost and usually cannot act on an allocation.
Show the source of every allocated amount
Which cycle, which sender, what basis. Without that an allocation is an unexplained number arriving monthly.
Report when the allocation basis changed
A change in statistical key figures moves cost between centres with no business event behind it, and it looks exactly like one.
Run the reconciliation between finance and controlling as a control
Not as an investigation triggered when something looks odd.
Getting an answer without waiting for a report change
The practical bottleneck in ECC6 FP&A is rarely the number. It is that answering a new question means a new report layout, and that means a queue.
ChatFin answers against the ledger directly and returns the selection it used, the ledger, the period, the posting status and the row count. That is the difference between an answer and a spreadsheet somebody remembers making.
Forecasting on ECC6, and the part that is honest
The mechanical half of a forecast is assembly, and an agent is good at it. The other half is judgement and it belongs to a person who owns the number.
| Task | Agent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Assemble the actuals baseline by cost centre and account | Strong | Retrieval and mapping, with the evidence in the line items |
| Roll forward contracted and scheduled cost | Strong | Rent, maintenance and dated agreements are documents it can read |
| Build a payables and receivables cash view | Strong | Open items by due date, priced on observed payment behaviour not stated terms |
| Flag assumptions actuals have already broken | Strong | It compares the assumption to posted activity and reports the gap |
| Predict a demand change | No | A commercial judgement with no ledger evidence |
| Decide which scenario goes to the board | No | The CFO's call, never a default |
The honest test of a forecasting claim is what happens when the driver is not in the system. The right answer is to say so and report what is knowable, not to substitute a proxy that silently changes what the forecast means.
ChatFin labels every assumption as observed or judged. An assumption a reviewer inherits without noticing is how a forecast becomes confidently wrong.
Where this underperforms on ECC6
Three, and all three predate any tool.
ChatFin ties out to a report your team already trusts before it does anything else. A rebuilt figure that does not tie is a finding, and it is better found in week one.

Questions SAP FP&A teams ask first
Does an AI agent for SAP work the same on ECC6 and S/4HANA?
The finance logic does. The read path does not. On S/4HANA the universal journal ACDOCA carries the line items. On ECC6 they sit in FAGLFLEXA under new general ledger, displayed through FAGLL03, with the documents in BKPF and BSEG, and classic general ledger installations differ again. ChatFin handles that in the read path rather than in the workflow, so exception rules and approval routing survive a migration.
Why does a cost centre variance so often turn out not to be an overspend?
Because allocations and planning gaps look identical to spending in a total. In a worked 268,000 variance, 112,000 was a cost centre added after the plan version was set, 64,000 was an internal order settlement visible only in controlling, and 47,000 was a released accrual. Only 51,000 was a genuine rate increase. ChatFin splits primary cost from allocated cost and names the source of every allocated amount.
What should be reported alongside a plan versus actual?
The plan version, its lock date and its coverage. Versions multiply, they get edited after circulation, and reforecasts are frequently partial with half the cost centres updated and the rest carrying the original. A variance against a reforecast covering 60 percent of cost centres means very little. ChatFin reports the version and the coverage split rather than presenting a single number.
Primary cost, allocated cost, and the version behind both.
ChatFin reads FAGLFLEXA and the controlling tables separately, reports the reconciliation between them, and splits every variance into components that add back to the reported total.
Each figure carries its selection, ledger, period, posting status and row count, and every comparison names the plan version and its coverage.
