AI Agents for Dynamics 365
Finance
Copilot is good at asking. Working out why 214 invoices did not match, and who can fix each one, is a workflow rather than a question.
- Copilot answers questions well. The hours go on working a population: which of 214 invoices failed to match, why, and who can fix each one. That is a workflow, not a query.
- ChatFin reads through OData entities and the Data Management Framework, which are versioned. Dynamics 365 releases on a wave cadence, so anything positional breaks quietly.
- Financial dimensions drift from the plan structure every year, and most variance investigations that end in nothing were a dimension change rather than a business event.
- Report the population difference before the variance. It costs seconds and it is almost never done because nothing prompts it.
- It underperforms where dimensions are inconsistently applied, where product receipts are entered late, or where custom logic sits in the posting path.
ChatFin runs finance AI agents on Dynamics 365 Finance. It reads through OData entities and the Data Management Framework, groups exception queues by cause rather than by value, explains a variance from the transactions behind it, and prepares close entries for a named person to approve. It posts nothing on its own.
The gap it fills sits next to what Microsoft already ships rather than against it. Copilot is genuinely good at answering a question about your data. It does not take the 214 vendor invoices that failed to match, sort them into the six things that actually went wrong, route each group to the person who can resolve it, and prepare the correction with the product receipt attached. That is where the week goes.
Copilot answers questions. Finance work is not a question
Microsoft has put real AI into Dynamics 365 Finance and it is genuinely useful for asking. What it does not do is take the invoice that failed to match, work out which of six things went wrong, decide who can fix it, and prepare the correction with the evidence attached. That is a workflow rather than a query.
| Asking | Working |
|---|---|
| What was spend by category last quarter | Why these 214 invoices did not match |
| Show me overdue receivables | Which of these short payments are credits already taken |
| Summarise this vendor's history | Whether this invoice is a duplicate under a new reference |
| What changed in this account | Split the movement into components that reconcile |
The right hand column is where a finance team's hours go, and none of it is answered by a better search box. It needs something that reads a population, groups it by cause, and prepares work for a person.
ChatFin is additive to what Dynamics 365 already ships. Where Copilot or a native agent already handles something cleanly there is no reason to put ChatFin in front of it, and it will say so.
How ChatFin connects to Dynamics 365 Finance
Through the published data layer rather than the interface.
What ChatFin does once it is connected
Four jobs, in the order most Dynamics 365 Finance teams get value from them.
Work the vendor invoice exception queue by cause
Not by value. Waiting on a product receipt, price outside tolerance, no purchase order, duplicate under a changed reference. Each group routed to whoever can answer it.
Apply cash against messy remittances
A payment settling forty invoices against the customer's own references with three short lines, proposed with each line traced to an open invoice and every difference named.
Explain a variance from the transactions
Split into components that add back to the reported total, with the vouchers behind each one, and the financial dimensions stated.
Prepare recurring close entries
Accruals from open purchase orders priced from the order, with product receipts attached, for a person to review and post.
Financial dimensions, and where analysis quietly breaks
Dynamics 365 carries the analysis in its financial dimensions, and dimensions drift from the plan structure every year. Most variance investigations that end in nothing were a dimension change rather than a business movement.
| What changed | What the comparison shows | What should be reported |
|---|---|---|
| A dimension value added mid year | A step change with no prior period | The population difference, before the variance |
| A dimension value renamed | One closing and another opening | Tracked on the underlying value, never the name |
| A dimension repurposed | Historic data means something else | The mapping, versioned with an effective date |
| A default dimension changed on a vendor | Cost moving between analysis lines | The change itself, dated |
Checking the population before explaining the number costs seconds and saves an afternoon. It is also almost never done, because nothing prompts it.
ChatFin holds the mapping between your plan structure and your financial dimensions with effective dates, and reports a population difference before it reports a variance.
Where ChatFin underperforms on Dynamics 365 Finance
Three, all worth testing before a pilot.

Questions Dynamics 365 teams ask first
How is this different from Copilot in Dynamics 365?
Copilot answers questions about your data and does it well. ChatFin works populations. The difference shows up on an exception queue: asking what spend was by category is a query, while working out which of 214 unmatched invoices are waiting on a product receipt, which are price differences outside tolerance and which are duplicates entered under a changed reference is a workflow that ends with prepared corrections. ChatFin is additive to Copilot rather than a replacement.
How does ChatFin connect to Dynamics 365 Finance?
Through OData entities, with the Data Management Framework where the volume justifies it, and business events where they are configured so the agent reacts rather than polls. Those are versioned, documented interfaces. Dynamics 365 releases on a wave cadence, and a form change in a wave update is a legitimate documented event that breaks screen automation silently, which is why nothing here is positional.
Why do Dynamics 365 variance investigations often find nothing?
Because the movement was a financial dimension change rather than a business event. A dimension value added mid year has no prior period comparison, a renamed value looks like one closing and another opening, and a changed default dimension on a vendor moves cost between analysis lines with nothing happening operationally. ChatFin holds the mapping with effective dates and reports the population difference before the variance.
Copilot answers. ChatFin works the queue.
ChatFin reads Dynamics 365 Finance through OData entities, groups exception queues by cause, explains movements from the vouchers behind them, and prepares close entries with their support attached.
Approval stays with a named person in Dynamics. ChatFin adds no second approval system and copies none of your master data.
