Close Automation
in 2026
AI close management arrived in 2026.1 and transaction matching in 2026.2. Here is what a NetSuite close looks like after both, and where the days still sit.
After enabling NetSuite's native AI close management and transaction matching, the remaining close time on most NetSuite estates sits in four places: goods received not invoiced accruals, reconciliation preparation, intercompany between subsidiaries and variance commentary. All four are preparation work rather than coordination work.
- Native close management improves coordination and status visibility across the close.
- The remaining days are preparation: accruals, reconciliations, intercompany and commentary.
- Subsidiary count is the strongest predictor of close length on NetSuite estates.
- Start preparation mid month so day one is not a standing start.
A NetSuite close in 2026 is better instrumented than it was two years ago. AI close management arrived with 2026.1, transaction matching and reconciliation assignment assistance with 2026.2, and the visibility a controller has over status is genuinely improved. Fewer tasks go missing and fewer people ask what is outstanding.
Visibility is not duration. When teams measure where the elapsed days actually go after those features are enabled, the answer is consistent: waiting on accruals, preparing reconciliations, arguing about intercompany and writing commentary. None of those are coordination problems, which is why better coordination did not shorten them.
The four stages that still consume a NetSuite close
Working through the calendar in order, with what can be prepared automatically at each stage.
Cutoff and goods received not invoiced
Payables cannot finalise until the receipts without invoices are understood, and that schedule is rebuilt every month from receipt data, open orders and somebody's memory of what is genuinely outstanding.
How it runs
Receipts, open orders and invoice history are read together, the accrual is drafted with the supporting lines attached, and receipts old enough to suggest a missing invoice are flagged separately because they need chasing rather than accruing. The same pass runs mid month so day one starts from a position rather than from zero.
Reconciliation preparation across many accounts
Most accounts are not difficult, they are numerous. Each one needs the balance pulled, the support located, the agreeing population matched and a handful of items investigated.
How it runs
The assembly and matching run automatically, so each reconciliation arrives with the agreed population cleared and the residual presented with both sides and the difference. Reviewers spend their time on judgement rather than on retrieval, which is most of the elapsed hours.

Intercompany between subsidiaries
NetSuite estates often carry many subsidiaries, and intercompany differences arising from timing, coding and rounding are the most common source of adjusting entries at group level.
How it runs
Pairs are matched continuously through the month so breaks surface while the transactions are recent, each break is shown with both legs and the difference to both teams at once, and the correcting entry is drafted for approval. Where a subsidiary runs a different ERP entirely, the same matching still applies.
Variance commentary before the review
Flux assistance highlights what moved. Somebody still traces each movement to the responsible transactions and writes an explanation that will survive a question, usually the evening before the review.
How it runs
Movements are decomposed into contributing transactions ranked by size, recurring items are separated from one offs, and the commentary is drafted citing those transactions. Where the driver cannot be identified from the data, that is flagged rather than narrated.

Starting before day one
Almost every close treats the first working day as the starting gun, which concentrates the entire workload into a narrow window regardless of how much of it could have happened earlier.
How it runs
Preparation runs continuously through the month, so reconciliations are largely built, intercompany is largely agreed and accruals are largely drafted before the period even ends. What remains after cutoff is genuinely period end work rather than a month of accumulated preparation.

Better visibility told everyone exactly which nine days they were losing. It did not give any of them back.

Sequenced to deliver inside a single close cycle.
Time the last close by stage
Record elapsed time for cutoff, reconciliation, intercompany and commentary separately.
Automate the accrual schedule
Goods received not invoiced is usually the earliest constraint and blocks payables cutoff.
Move intercompany mid month
Match pairs before period end so breaks surface while both teams remember the transaction.
Prepare reconciliations continuously
Run preparation through the month so day one starts from a position rather than a blank sheet.
