Framed as build versus buy, the Sage Intacct AI decision misses a third option. There are really three: enable the native Copilot features you already pay for, build your own layer on the API, or buy a workflow platform. The honest comparison is about what each covers and what each costs to run.

None of the three is wrong. The mistake is choosing one without seeing what it leaves you to do. Native Copilot leaves the execution. Building leaves you the maintenance. Buying leaves you the vendor selection. This lays out each.

Option one: native Sage Copilot

Turn on what you already have. Sage Copilot is the embedded assistant, and the Finance Intelligence agent that runs on it lets users ask questions of their financial data. That agent is still in a phased Early Adopter rollout, switched on per company by an administrator, and several Copilot features launched in the US and UK first. For answering questions inside Intacct and flagging variances, this is real value at no extra vendor.

What it does not do is run capture to posting, reconciliation or collections end to end with governed write back. It answers. It does not execute the multi step processes. If that is all you need, start and stop here.

Option two: build your own

With the REST API, the AI Gateway and the MCP Server, you can build. The interfaces are there. The question is everything above them: the orchestration that strings steps together, the approval workflow, the audit trail, the exception handling, and the maintenance as Sage ships releases.

The gap between automation you configure and workflows you buy
You own the orchestration logic and its edge cases.
You own governance: least privilege, approvals, audit.
You own maintenance across Sage releases.
You own it for one ERP, then repeat for the next.
You carry the risk if the person who built it leaves.

Someone has to own it after launch

A build looks cheapest until you cost the person who maintains it through every Sage release.

We have a strategic initiative at the corporate level, IT feeds the technology, and my team thinks about the use cases.

Name the owner and the maintenance budget for a build option before comparing it against a purchase.

Option three: buy a workflow platform

A platform gives you the prebuilt finance workflows, the governed write back and the audit trail without building them. The trade is vendor selection and fit. The right platform covers AP, close, collections and consolidation out of the box.

The hidden cost is maintenance

The build option looks cheapest until you count maintenance. An integration is not built once. It is maintained across every release, every edge case and every staff change. A platform absorbs that, which is usually where the real cost comparison turns.

Why ChatFin is a defensible buy

ChatFin does not compete with native Copilot or the API. It uses them. ChatFin does not replace Sage Intacct or compete with Sage Copilot. It runs on top of the ERP, and where the AI Gateway, MCP Server and REST API are available it uses them as the governed pipe Sage built. What ChatFin adds is the finance workflow layer: multi step processes from capture to posting, run across every entity, with a human approving each write back and a full prompt to transaction trail. The same ChatFin surface runs across Sage Intacct, NetSuite, SAP Business One, Acumatica, JD Edwards and Dynamics 365, which matters for groups that run more than one ERP or do not want to wait on Early Adopter gating or a single vendor roadmap. So buying ChatFin is not betting against Sage. It is adding the workflow layer on top of Sage.

A sensible decision

Enable native Copilot for questions. For the processes that eat hours, buy the workflow layer rather than building and maintaining it. Build only where you have a genuinely unique need and the team to maintain it. The CFO tools guide and controller agents guide help frame the choice.

Build, Enable or Buy AI on Sage Intacct

The Sage Intacct AI decision is three ways: enable native Copilot, build your own, or buy a workflow platform. The hidden cost of building is maintenance across every release.

ChatFin is the buy option, and it uses native AI and the API rather than competing. Book a demo to compare it to building.
