# How an AI Agent Can Access JD Edwards Without Exposing Database Credentials, Sensitive Financial Data or Unrestricted Transaction Access

A database account is the fastest route to a prototype, and JD Edwards already provides a better path.
 Key Takeaways
- No database credentials need to exist. AIS token sessions carry username, environment and role, so the agent authenticates as a user rather than as a database.
- Sensitive data exposure is reduced by aggregating at source and returning summaries with drill down rather than shipping rows.
- Unrestricted transaction access is prevented by an orchestration whitelist, not by instructing the model to behave.
- The model itself holds no credentials and has no network path to JD Edwards. It calls tools; the tools call the ERP.
- ChatFin uses this pattern by design: no database accounts, whitelisted actions, minimum data movement and approval before any posting.

Three distinct worries usually sit behind this question, and they have three different answers. Credentials, data exposure and write capability are separate problems that get discussed as one, which is why the conversation often goes in circles.

Taken separately, each has a clean solution that JD Edwards already supports.

## Why the Model Never Holds Credentials

Worth establishing first, because it removes a large part of the perceived risk. The language model has no credentials, no connection string and no network route to your ERP.

It receives a question and a list of tools it may call. Your middle layer executes those tools, applies policy and returns structured results. Everything the model can do is an entry in that list, which means the security question is about the tool layer rather than about the model.
**Tools, not access:** The model requests; the layer decides and executes.**No connection string:** Nothing resembling a credential is ever placed in a prompt or in model context.**Bounded capability:** The model cannot invent an action that is not on the list.**Auditable requests:** What the model asked for is logged separately from what was executed.![ChatFin as the AI layer sitting on top of the ERP](https://chatfin.ai/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/chatfin-layer.png)

## Access that someone answers for

Keeping database credentials away from the model is a security decision, and it is also an accountability one. Every read traces back to a named user whose permissions allowed it.

> Ultimately you're accountable for the results and you need to know the numbers. It can't just come straight out of the thing.
> Teddy Collins, on the AgentCFO podcast

That traceability is what lets a controller defend an agent's output. A model holding its own keys would leave nobody answerable for what it saw.

## Authenticating Without Database Credentials

JD Edwards provides the right mechanism. A call to the AIS token request service with credentials returns a session token, and the response carries the username, environment and role, so subsequent calls operate inside the security model rather than around it.

That means no database account is required for any part of this. The agent authenticates as a JD Edwards user, and everything it can see is what that user could see in the application.
**Token sessions:** Established once and reused, rather than a new session per request.**Role carried:** Username, environment and role travel with the session, so entitlements apply.**Secrets managed:** The credentials used to obtain the token live in a secrets manager with rotation.**No database path:** There is no scenario in this design where the agent needs a database account.
## Limiting Sensitive Data Movement

The second worry is different from the first. Even with correct authentication, a badly designed agent will pull large volumes of ledger detail across a boundary because it is easier than thinking about what it needs.

The discipline is to compute at the source and move as little as possible. Aggregation and paging are supported by the data service, so sums and groupings can be produced by the query rather than by shipping rows out and processing them elsewhere.
**Aggregate at source:** Totals and groupings computed by the query, so a small correct result travels.**Summaries with drill down:** Return the aggregate first and the detail only on request, which matches how people work anyway.**Field selection:** Request the fields needed rather than everything the table offers.**Result caps:** A maximum row count, which protects both performance and exposure.![AI first architecture connecting agents to an ERP](https://chatfin.ai/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/ai-first-achitecture.png)
## Preventing Unrestricted Transaction Access

The third worry is the most important and the most straightforward to solve. Write capability should not be a general permission, it should be a short list of specific, named, single purpose actions.

A posting orchestration. A voucher creation orchestration. A transfer orchestration. Each is separately whitelisted, separately testable and separately auditable, and anything not on the list cannot be invoked no matter what the model proposes.
**One orchestration per action:** Single purpose services rather than a general write endpoint.**Explicit whitelist:** Reviewable on one page, with change control around additions.**Approval before execution:** A named person confirms before anything reaches the ledger.**Separate identities:** The read path cannot reach a posting orchestration at all.
## The Gateway Layer

A gateway in front of the AIS Server is not required to make anything work, which is why it gets skipped, and it is what converts a working integration into a governable one.

It gives you one place where authentication is enforced, rate limits applied, payloads inspected and calls logged independently of the agent's own account of what it did.
**Single entry point:** One controlled door, so there is one place to look when a question arises.**Independent logging:** A record that does not depend on the agent reporting honestly.**Rate limiting:** Protecting the ERP from a misbehaving or looping caller.**Payload inspection:** Enforcing that only permitted services are being called, at the boundary.
"The model has no credentials and no route to your ledger. It asks; the layer decides. Design the layer, not the prompt."

## What This Looks Like to a Reviewer

The value of this pattern is that each of the three concerns has a concrete, demonstrable answer.

There are no database credentials to inspect because none exist. Data movement is minimised and the design shows why. And write capability is a short list a reviewer can read, rather than a general permission constrained by policy.
**Credentials:** None of database type exist; token sessions inherit user roles.**Exposure:** Aggregation at source, field selection and result caps, demonstrable in the query design.**Write capability:** A whitelist on one page, with approval enforced before execution.**Evidence:** Gateway logs independent of the agent, plus the complete action record.
## How ChatFin Implements It

ChatFin authenticates through AIS token sessions so it operates inside your role design, holds no database credentials, aggregates at source and returns summaries with drill down rather than bulk rows, and executes only whitelisted orchestrations after named approval.

Nothing is installed inside EnterpriseOne, and the gateway sits where you place it, so the entire access path is one you configure and can inspect.

## No Database Accounts, No Bulk Extracts, No General Write

ChatFin reaches JD Edwards through AIS token sessions that inherit your role design, aggregates at source to minimise data movement, and executes only whitelisted orchestrations after a named approval.

**Giving the agent a database account is the fastest route to a prototype and the slowest route through a security review.**

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does an AI agent need database credentials for JD Edwards?

No, and it should not have them. A call to the AIS token request service returns a session token whose response carries username, environment and role, so the agent authenticates as a JD Edwards user and sees what that user could see in the application. A database account bypasses the security model entirely, attributes every action to one identity, and places a write capable credential within reach of a query path.

### How is sensitive data exposure limited?

By computing at the source and moving as little as possible. The data service supports aggregation and paging, so totals and groupings are produced by the query rather than by shipping rows out for processing elsewhere. Return summaries with drill down on request, select only the fields needed rather than everything the table offers, and cap result sizes.

### How do you prevent the agent from having general write access?

Write capability should be a short list of specific, single purpose orchestrations rather than a general permission. A posting orchestration, a voucher creation orchestration, and so on, each separately whitelisted, testable and auditable. Anything absent from the list cannot be invoked regardless of what the model proposes, and the read path should use a separate identity with no route to any posting orchestration.
