Basware Alternatives
for Accounts Payable
Structured e invoicing solves arrival and compliance. It leaves every lookup exactly where it was.
- Basware's centre of gravity is e invoicing and compliance rather than document capture, which separates it from most of this category.
- If you trade across countries with live or incoming e invoicing mandates, that is a specific problem an accounts payable tool does not solve as a side effect.
- When invoices arrive as structured data, the capture problem largely disappears and everything that was actually expensive remains.
- Which receipt matches, whether it was already paid, who can approve it and what it should be coded to are unchanged by how the invoice arrived.
- The two are complementary more than competing. A network solves arrival. It does not tell you a payee's bank details changed since the last successful payment.
Basware is an enterprise accounts payable and e invoicing vendor whose published positioning centres on compliance and structured invoice exchange across countries. This page sets out what they publish, what structured arrival actually changes, and where the two approaches sit relative to each other. ChatFin operates no e invoicing network and does not claim to.
The substantive point is easy to miss. Solving capture perfectly, by receiving invoices as validated structured data rather than as PDFs, removes extraction error entirely and leaves the matching, coding, approver and duplicate questions exactly where they were. That is the same argument ChatFin makes about extraction generally, arriving from the opposite direction.
Basware's centre of gravity is compliance, not capture
Basware is an enterprise accounts payable and e invoicing vendor whose published positioning is invoice lifecycle management: every invoice from receipt to payment, across entities and countries. They describe one of the larger open e invoicing networks, reaching suppliers across many countries and supporting structured exchange formats including PEPPOL and country specific standards.
| What Basware publishes | Why it matters for a multi country buyer |
|---|---|
| An open e invoicing network | Structured exchange rather than PDF capture |
| Compliance that updates as mandates change | Mandates are moving quickly and by country |
| SmartCoding and invoice matching | Automation for PO and non PO invoices |
| Verification before payment | Their stated control position |
| Statement matching | Supplier statement reconciliation included |
The compliance point is the one that separates them from most of this category. If you invoice or receive invoices across several countries with live or incoming e invoicing mandates, that is a real and specific problem, and it is not one an accounts payable automation tool solves as a side effect. ChatFin does not solve it either, and says so plainly rather than describing a capture feature as though it were compliance.
ChatFin does not operate an e invoicing network and does not claim to. Where statutory e invoicing is the problem, that is a different category of product.
Structured exchange changes what is left to automate
This is the substantive difference and it is easy to miss. When invoices arrive as structured data through a network rather than as PDFs in a mailbox, the capture problem largely disappears. What remains is everything ChatFin argues was always the real work, and ChatFin makes that case for PDFs and structured data alike.
| With structured e invoicing | Still unresolved |
|---|---|
| Fields arrive clean | Which receipt it matches |
| No extraction error | Whether it was already paid |
| Format is validated | Who is allowed to approve it |
| Compliance is checked | What it should be coded to |
| The document is authentic | Whether the bank details changed |
The right hand column is unchanged by how the invoice arrived. That is the point ChatFin makes about extraction generally: reading the invoice was never the expensive part, and solving it perfectly through a network leaves the lookups exactly where they were.
ChatFin resolves the right hand column against your orders, receipts, coding precedent and payment history, whether the invoice arrived as a PDF or as structured data.
When each one fits
Plainly, and these two overlap less than the others in this set.
What we have not verified
Network reach, training scale and analyst placement are Basware's published claims and are reported here as theirs. No head to head comparison with ChatFin exists.
ChatFin makes no e invoicing compliance claim. Where the requirement is statutory exchange, that is the wrong question to ask us.

What is Basware mainly for?
By their own description, invoice lifecycle management with compliance at the centre: an open e invoicing network reaching suppliers across many countries, structured exchange in formats including PEPPOL and country specific standards, and compliance rules that update as mandates change. Capture and coding automation sit alongside that.
If invoices arrive as structured data, is AP solved?
Arrival is solved. The rest is not. A structured invoice still does not tell you which goods receipt it matches, whether it has already been paid under another reference, who is allowed to approve it, or what it should be coded to. Those are lookups against your own orders, receipts and history, and they are unchanged by the arrival format.
Do we need both?
Possibly, and they overlap less than the other comparisons in this set. If your problem statement contains the word mandate, start with a compliance vendor. If it contains exception, coding or approver, that is a different problem. A network cannot tell you a payee's bank details differ from the last successful payment, because that is a comparison against your own payment history.
Whatever the format, the lookups remain.
ChatFin resolves matching, coding, approver validation and duplicates against your own orders, receipts and payment history.
It works the same whether the invoice arrived as a PDF in a mailbox or as validated structured data through a network.
